AMHSA • AMHSA update October 17th 2006 AMHSA, the Automated Material Handling Systems Association, is the voice of the UK automated handling industry. Based in Leicester the association includes companies both large and small from the conveyor, crane and system integration arms of the industry that supply over 80% of all automated handling equipment purchased in the UK.
AMHSA provides a forum for members to discuss matters of mutual interest and to promote ever-improving standards of quality and safety for users of automated materials handling systems. The Association plays a significant role in the drafting of CEN and ISO standards affecting the automated handling sector.
Mike Vernon, General Manager of Univeyor Ltd, has recently been appointed Vice-President of the association. Graham Watts, Secretary of AMHSA, said, “Mike’s appointment is recognition of his broad industry knowledge, acquired during more than twenty years’ experience of materials handling. He has been an active member of AMHSA for several years and knows many of the members well. He also has a keen interest in Health and Safety legislation currently affecting the industry. All this, coupled with his enthusiasm for the role, made him an ideal candidate for Vice-President.”
The Association’s Technical Committee, debates industry-wide policy on safety and technical matters and reviews standards in the light of future legislation and technology. It maintains close contact with government organisations such as the DTI and the HSE. The association also offers information on reliable suppliers, other associations such as BMHF (British Materials Handling Federation) as well as other current regulations relevant to the industry. AMHSA also offer independent and impartial advice on any issues relating to unit handling conveyor systems.
As well as information and advice, the association maintains a case studies section, containing information on systems and projects supplied by its members. A library of articles, legislation and reports that can be downloaded is also available to all members.
Association meetings are held quarterly and members are requested to host the events so that attendees have the opportunity to visit other members’ premises in turn and to vary the venue
More recently, AMHSA has launched an online exhibition to highlight its member products and services. The exhibition offers visitors two search functions, a keyword or phrase search or a search by category.
